Charlie started his life-long love affair with the performing arts at an early age. Very active in local dramatic societies whilst growing up, he accordingly went on to study BA (Drama) at the University of Pretoria where he also attained a certificate in stage combat. Charlie likes getting involved, and has attended many stunt and weapons courses and workshops so as to do his own stunts. He has most recently (last year) acquired his Licentiate in Musical Theatre from Trinity College London.
In 2003 Charlie debuted professionally in the national touring production of Fame – The Musical. Some of his notable theatre successes include playing the psychotic Dr Frank-N-Furter in a national tour of The Rocky Horror Show; portraying the roles of Kenickie, Sonny and Vince Fontaine as a member of the West End international touring company of Grease; the diabolical Bombardier Kotze in the critically acclaimed Somewhere on the Border at the National Arts Festival, with runs at the Market- and Baxter Theatres; and Mafioso Gyp De Carlo in the national and international touring production of Jersey Boys. Charlie is also heard frequently on the radio as he is a voice artist. He is currently playing the title role in Leon Van Nierop’s daily radio drama: Hartebreker. Oh, and not to mention that he’s also a singer and musician (saxophone and guitar).
Charlie is well known for his commitment and work ethic. This versatile actor continually nurtures and builds upon his craft as he consistently aspires toward producing excellent work. When this Johannesburg artist isn’t having a human experience in a role he’s giving life to, he can be found cruising single-track on his mountain bike.
